Flooring Care

Proper care of your floor prevents damage, extends its life and keeps it looking new for years. How do you properly care for your flooring? Here are some general tips that will help keep your floors looking good.

Dirt
Dirt and grit are the enemy of all floors. To stop the dirt from coming into your home put dirt trapping mats outside all external doors. Inside the house consider placing rugs or hall runners in high traffic areas to keep the dirt and grit off your floor and preserve the flooring underneath.

Stains
Remove stains as soon as they occur, and only use cleaning products specific to the flooring affected. Never flood the floor with water.
Remember, maintenance cleaning now, will keep your floor coverings looking good and lasting longer.

Carpet
There are three golden rules to follow for everlasting clean carpet.
1. Frequent thorough vacuuming.
2. Prompt clean up of spills.
3. Periodic professional steam cleaning.

Laminate
Laminate floors are made to look good for many years with a minimum of effort. Most laminates come with a 10 to 20 year residential warranty against staining, wearing and fading. All you really need for cleaning are a vacuum cleaner, a dry mop and a damp towel for more difficult stains. Vacuum and mop regularly to keep grit off the floor, and clean up spills and stains immediately and you will be able to enjoy your laminate floor for years to come.
In cleaning vinyl and laminate floors it’s important to limit the amount of water you put on the floor. You can do this by dry mopping. Dry mopping involves wringing as much water out of the mop as possible before mopping your floor.

Timber
The biggest killer of polished timber floors is dirt and grit being walked on the floor causing a sanding effect. This greatly increases the wear of the surface. First point of attack should be to have proper grit capturing mats at all entrances thus eliminating the amount of grit and dirt being carried on to the floor.

If your floors are new, wait until your floor has dried and “cured” before you use any cleaning products on it. This usually takes a week. The surface should be swept daily with an anti static mop to remove dust and grit. High speed buffing can also enhance the appearance of the floor. Over time extra coats of polish will need to be applied to high wear areas as required.

Cleaning up spills
Do not use abrasives, or scrub your floors with steel wool or scrubbing brushes. When mopping is required ensure that the surface is cleaned with a cleaner specifically for timber floors, because other detergents can damage the finish on your floor. If you spill anything on the floor – even water – clean it up immediately and never flood the floor with water or allow spills to stay on the floor for an extended period of time.

Tiles
Regardless of what type of tiles you have, all you need is two simple steps to keeping your floors clean. Firstly, sweep or vacuum your floors to remove dirt and grit and then mop your floor weekly or as needed.
When mopping your floors be careful if using a sponge mop, because it can pull dirt on to your grout. Instead, try using a micro fibre mop to keep your grout cleaner for longer.
